To show case the talent of young designers and encourage them to become involved in Marketing at Retail, POPAI Australia & New Zealand together with the POPAI Sustainability Committee launched the Student Sustainability Design Awards earlier this year.

The initiative is aimed at lifting awareness of sustainable materials in the design of point of purchase displays, as well as allowing tertiary students to work on a commercial brief prepared by one of Australia’s largest brands.

This year, students submitted designs and case studies to a brief set by Nestle Australia for Nescafe Gold. With a judging panel composed of brand marketers, industry designers and producers of POP, each design was assessed against its use of sustainable materials, retail presence & brand equity and conceptual strategy.

The winner was announced at RMIT University with Mr Tom Harris, CEO, POPAI Australia & New Zealand congratulating Melanie Martin, a Second Year Visual Merchandising student on her successful design.

Three of Australia’s leading POP producers: Active Display Group, Retail Solutions and SPOS sponsored the prize, a eight week scholarship offering work experience with one of the companies as a Junior Graphic Designer.

Melanie has elected to work with the Melbourne based Active Display Group. This position will allow her to get hands-on, client driven creative experience of the retail marketing sector. She will work with experienced design professionals on ‘real’ client briefs.

Peter Roff-Smith, Design Manager for Active Display Group said the contest was a ‘great initiative from POPAI Australia & New Zealand and Nestle and he was pleased to see the prize go to such a deserving winner’.

The Student Sustainability Design Awards Contest will be run on an annual basis by POPAI Australia & New Zealand and will be open in 2009 to students enrolled in University, TAFE or Tertiary Colleges in Australia. For more information, contact Karen Spear at POPAI Australia & New Zealand on 02 9984 9322 or email karens@popai.com.au

Sustainability News - Paddy Pallin Raises the Green Bar with New Melbourne Store

Paddy Pallin Raises the Green Bar with New Melbourne Store

After 20 years in Little Bourke Street, Australia’s oldest outdoor and travel outfitter, Paddy
Pallin is raising the bar for retailers and adventure outfitters with the opening of their new
‘green’ Melbourne store on November 17. The store’s facelift incorporates re-cycled and low
energy fittings – while ‘environmentally senstitive’ also defines much of the range of clothing
and gear.

“Paddy Pallin was a dedicated bushwalker and ardent conservationist, so ‘green’ has been a
part of our company ethos for the past 70 years. The new Melbourne fit-out gave us the
opportunity to take our efforts a step further,” explains Rob Pallin, CEO and son of Paddy
Pallin. “In Paddy’s bushwalking and conservation tradition, we’re not just talking the talk,
we’re walking the walk. We’ll be the first outdoor equipment retailer in Australia – in fact, one
of the first of any kind of retailer – to adopt a range of initiatives, building materials and green
features in a shop fit-out, over and above normal building regulations.”

The new fit-out incorporates as many environmentally-sensitive features as budget – and
Melbourne City Council – would allow. They range from the obvious, such as low energy
lighting and green energy supply, to the practical – such as bicycle racks and showers to
encourage staff to ride to work. – to the innovative. Sixty-five per cent of the old store’s timber
framing and electrical wiring was re-used; paints are all water-based and non-toxic; timber
veneer floors, walls and counters are derived from sustainable forests and the joinery is
adhesive-free, which means most of the interior is biodegradable, re-usable and recyclable.

The innovative store front signage is a vertical garden principally comprised of Australian
natives that will turn carbon dioxide back into oxygen. In an effort to reduce the 2.7 million
plastic water bottles that go into landfill each year Paddy Pallin are teaming up with Camelbak
to provide a water re-filling station in the new store. This means that customers and the
general public can fill their Camelbak bottle or bladder with filtered water every day of the
year for free and help reduce plastic waste.

The company has taken a holistic approach to sustainability. Not only does the fit-out
incorporate green features, the range of clothing and outdoor gear favours environmentallysensitive
brands and products such as Icebreaker fine merino wool clothing, which
incorporates a ‘Baa code’, enabling individual garments to be traced back to source.

There are long-standing in-store initiatives such as Don’t Bag the Environment (20 cents is
donated to conservation for every carry bag a customer refuses); recycling and waste
minimisation regimes; and staff are encouraged by the leadership provided by company
directors, Rob and Nancy Pallin, who have been active and effective environmental
conservation campaigners for most of their lives.

The new Melbourne store opens on November 17, with the official opening celebration for
Paddy Pallin Club Members and customers on December 4.

The inaugural Future's So Bright Green Sustainability Conference was held at the Randwick Pavilion, AJC Convention Centre, Randwick Racecourse Sydney on October 22 and attracted close to 300 delegates. According to Tom Harris, the CEO of POPAI Australia & New Zealand, the industry association that organised the conference, said positive feedback was received from delegates on the high quality of the presentations and the broad subject matter covered.

The Conference saw 13 speakers from leading corporations, retail experts and academics, industry associations, and POPAI Australia & New Zealand member companies speak about sustainability initiatives, global best practice, government policy, challenges and opportunities.

POPAI Australia and New Zealand plans to identify successful and cost-effective sustainable practices within the Marketing at Retail industry (which includes Point Of Purchase and In-Store Merchandising) in order to expand and improve upon those activities and encourage all members to adopt similar practices. The association's vision is to provide industry decision makers with insights and strategies to improve their sustainability and environmental performance to meet the consumer demand for more environmentally responsible products.

The Future's So Bright Green Sustainability Conference was an initiative of POPAI Australia and New Zealand, a not-for-profit association aimed at bringing together Retailers, Brands Designers & Producer Suppliers to learn from 'best practice' sharing, and hear and learn about sustainability initiatives .

For further information contact Tom Harris or Karen Spear at the POPAI Australia & New Zealand in Sydney: Tel: (02) 9984 9322 or email karens@popai.com.au
